New Moon & Full Moon Dates in 2014

by Joumana Saber

Many of you are probably wondering why we do not have a Mysore class at the Yoga Room on new and full moon days. Instead, we tell you to "take rest" (from your asana practice). Simple - Ashtanga yoga is a traditional system, and resting on moon days is an observance that is part of the traditional approach. Moreover, the Indian astrological belief is that it is not auspicious to do certain things on moon days. We are a community of Ashtanga yoga practitioners. Our intention is to honour tradition. Observing moon days is one way to do so, and there are various explanations as to why practicing on a moon day is not recommended.

The following quote is from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Public Talks on Ashtanga Yoga in France - 1991, written by Guy Donahaye (Certified Teacher by Guruji):

"That day is very difficult day. Two stars one place (conjunction) is going. New moon also, full moon also. That day, very dangerous day. You (take) practice (on that day), anyone can have a small pain starting. That pain is not going very quickly. Long time he is taking. Some broken possible. That is why that day don't do."

Guruji spoke in very simple terms - his english was sometimes hard to follow, but the message was clear and people understood (more or less) what he was saying.

It is important to note a few things:
  • Guruji's father was an astrologer
  • Guruji was a student at the Sanskrit College in Mysore (Maharaja's Pathashala), which was closed each month on moon days as well as the day before and after (read why here)
  • Guruji followed certain cultural and traditional rituals from a very young age
To quote Eddie Stern from an article I read: "Pattabhi Jois had certain habits from the age of 14. Why he had these habits is interesting, and though we may not be Brahmins, or even Indian, as his students it is good to understand why certain things were done by him, and accept that if he felt them important enough to follow, that they are applicable to us too."

The phases of the moon are determined by the moon's relative position to the sun. At a full and new moon, the earth, moon and sun are in approximate alignment. A new moon occurs when the moon is positioned between the earth and the sun. This way, we are not able to see the illuminated portion of the moon. A full moon occurs when the moon and sun are on opposite sides of the earth, allowing us to see the entire illuminated portion of the moon.

Tim Miller explains:

"Like all things of a watery nature (human beings are bout 70% water), we are affected by the phases of the moon. Both sun and moon exert a gravitational pull on the earth. Their relative positions create different energetic experiences that can be compared to the breath cycle. The full moon energy corresponds to the end of inhalation when the force of prana (life force, energy, breath) is greatest. This is an expansive, upward moving force that makes us feel energetic and emotional, but not well grounded. The Upanishads state that the main prana lives in the head. During the full moon, we tend to be more headstrong.

The new moon energy corresponds to the end of exhalation when the force of apana (life force that goes down) is greatest. Apana is a contracting, downward moving force that makes us feel calm and grounded, but dense and disinclined towards physical exertion."

To conclude, we are taught to do our asana practice 6 times a week with one day rest. When you practice on a regular basis, you start to notice that your body becomes more attuned to natural cycles such as the moon cycle. As Ashtanga yoga practitioners and students of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois lineage, we observe moon days out of respect for Guruji.
